About Me
I'm a Melbourne boy, hailing from St Kilda with one ex, one current wife and four kids. Love the outdoors and making new discoveries. I cook a lot at home (cheers from wife) and do some preserving, mostly jams, pickles and fruit liqueurs. This is the diary of a cooking journey.

Melbourne Food Blogger Meet
The guys and gals of the Melbourne food blogging scene met last night at the St Kilda community garden known as Veg Out. Ed from Tomato very kindly organized the venue as well as a bucket of pizza dough and was instrumental in bringing everyone together.

It was a warmish day, but as the venue was not far from the bay, it cooled off fairly quickly, unlike the pizza oven which seemed to have an internal temperature hotter than the sun. The first few pizzas were well charred after only a couple of minutes of oven time, but as things wore on and the experience level grew, the pizzas worked out better.

I wonder if I'm the first person to ever bring McDonalds to a food blogger get together?

Well, it wasn't the only thing I brought along, there was some tortilla in paper cups and spicy barbeque prawns as well, but my daughter M just doesn't understand these things yet. The tables were groaning with all sorts of food contributions, wonderful dips, creamy cheeses, dumplings, meatballs, cake, chocolate truffles and salads. Who could forget in a hurry Ed's little tin of silkworm pupae or were they larvae or just fat little maggots? The best thing about them was the drink I took to rinse one out of my mouth, yuk! Thanks Ed for that.

Unfortunately, we couldn't stay long, just as the conversations were getting interesting too. I met a few of you and I'm sorry I didn't get to meet more, though it was fun imagining who was who. There was someone who I could have sworn I knew but even though he felt the same, we just couldn't work it out. Elliot, I'm sure we'll remember. He was also the author of the hardest food quiz I've ever attempted.

It was a great night. Well done Ed and all.

Good to see you are Neil and glad you managed to pop in. Those prawns were good. I also filled up on the potatoes...but if i'd known there was McDonalds there - were there fries?

Anh, it was hard for us to make it too, fortunately we live just around the corner. I'm sure there will be another one when we can meet.

Hi tanna, it was so great, wished we could have stayed longer, there was some barramundi that looked awesome.

Hi jon, as I look forward to vicariously visiting restaurants with you.

Hi ed, I wouldn't have missed those silkworm pupae for anything!!! There were fries, but you would have had more chance of getting them off me than M.

It was nice to meet you Neil. Wasn't that quiz so hard. Who won in the end? I didn't even enter seeing as I couldn't answer one question and be certain of my answer. I'll have to email Elliot and get the answers.

Hi gigi, thanks for your kind offer, but I would suggest that one tin was enough. I'm thinking you're too modest and can cook pretty well.

Hi duncan, me too, I was really looking forward to meeting you and those salty macaroons you brought along. I'm sure we'll get the chance soon.

Hi thanh, it was great to meet you too, sorry I couldn't hang around to get to talk to you a bit more, a shame really. Next time, okay.

Neil, you do yourself an injustice... the prawns were AMAZING - i had to go and cook pizza just to stop eating them!

and to clarify, the McDonalds was a wee bit of bribery wasn't it? although i noticed that as time rolled on she became interested in the other food and (shock horror) even tried a few morsels here and there.

nice to meet you. M is lovely. I particularly enjoyed her reprimand for joking with the ever expanding man regarding the spilt wine! ;)

Hi grocer, thank you for your kind words about the prawns, I've done them quite a few times since the original post, so they're no longer just Grand Final prawns.

I missed that exchange with Josh, but it sounds like our M alright, I passed on your regards at the end and she seemed quite pleased. It was great to meet you as well, sorry that you seemed to be doing all the work!

it was work and it wasn't. another string to the bow. i love being able to roll up my sleeves and prove that something can work - it's the mary contrary in me.

you can also tell M that I was well chuffed that she sought me out to say goodbye when you left. I thought it was really sweet of her.
