Totally Bad Blogger
My 8yo daughter M was hungry and hovering as I put together dinner. There were two pots simmering away and when the contents of the first was ready, tipped into a baking pan and smothered with the contents of the second, then a little cheese was grated on top, before going in the oven.
"Are you going to take a picture dad?"
"Nup, we're just going to eat it"
As it baked, M stayed in the kitchen, shouting out,
"It smells really good!"
The taste lived up to the olfactory promise; to compound matters though, I'm not even going to tell you, no matter how delicious, what it was.
Cooking's like that sometimes, more instinct than instruction.

Neil, you are so passionate about this- I don't know why you aren't cooking profesionally. You obviously derive such a sense of pleasure and accomplishment from it. What a beutiful post.

That's the beauty of sharing food with those we love.
No matter what you cooked, no matter how wonderful it tasted, it could not have been more beautiful than the moment with M!
Sometimes a few words are worth a thousand pictures.
Hi J, my time has passed regarding becoming a chef, but I'm happy writing about food and pleased that you like the things I write about; you're right, it does give me a lot of pleasure.
Hi tanna, that's exactly right, those moments are so special and can never be replaced.
Hi lydia, I know plenty would disagree, but words have always given me more comfort than pictures...except for Ikea assembly instructions!
Aw ~ bad blogger, but good foodie father. Some dishes are too sweet even to be shared. But you've conveyed the moment. Nice one, Neil. :)
I love that she's reminding you to take pictures. But this time no photo needed, what a nice post.
Hi gigi, it was so funny, the second M asked if I was taking the shot and I knew I wasn't, this blogger guilt descended. But then, so long as there was no photo, there was to be no recipe either, it was all about being with family, sharing the moment.
Hi kalyn, M is actually quite taken with the blog, she loves to look at her picture in the header(holding the doll) and has named everyone featured there with family names...except for the duck, we don't have a duck.
Having a little one of my own, I'm guessing..mac 'n cheese? A dish I've yet to see a good shot of.
Jen
I agree. Sometimes you just have to say 'bugger the blog' and enjoy the moment.
Hi jen, great guess and very close. It was the Greek cousin of mac 'n' cheese, pastichio. M loves both and very glad that in our mac 'n' cheese, I can use gruyere, she didn't like it for ages, so now everyone is happy.
Hi dani, funny isn't it, some things you cook seem so natural to go on the blog, yet others, for whatever reason, seem private.
Great post. I know what you mean tho, sometimes its best to enjoy the moment and the food and just get into it.
Hi robert, sometimes we forget, don't we; there was life before blogging!
You don't have a duck?? That's it, I'm not visiting any more - the duck was my favourite!
;-)
Fab post, and so true - sometimes real life matters so much more than the perfect pic for the blog.
Hi jeanne, I ate it, don't tell M, okay? That was exactly how I was feeling at the time, the blog was the furthest thing from my mind.
