World Autism Awareness Day
April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day.
In a bit of a tricky move, Autism Victoria are holding their day on April 1, marking it by marching at 12pm from their offices at 24 Drummond Street, Carlton to the State Library, where they plan to release 1000 multi coloured balloons to visually respect and represent the individuality of those on the Autism Spectrum.
Federation Square in Melbourne are supporting the day by turning their lights blue and showing autism messages on their screens.
At My Table will be taking part in the day by cooking a dish of one single colour, to represent the diets of some of those, especially children, on the autistic spectrum whom only eat food that is of one particular colour, something of a nightmare for parents concerned with good nutrition.
Iranian soup, Ash Restah
If anyone else could manage the difficult task of a one coloured dish and would like to blog it, I would be happy to link to your post. It would be a tremendous show of support for parents, who, quite frankly, often run out of ideas. You can find my contact details in the right-side column.

Wonderful ideas, Neil. I'll get thinking about something...
Neil, I would be honored to participate. I'll start thinking about what to make.
Will try and come up with something for you Neil.
Thanks for organizing this event, Neil! You are right, managing the diet of a child on the autism spectrum can be quite a challenge for parents.
Neil, I would love to participate in this event. My husband and I work with children with autism and many of our clients have food aversion issues. Would it be okay with you if I came up with a dish that I know would appeal to my clients, but isn't necessarily all one color?
One color, healthy ... allrighty then ... that's a bit of a challenge for a blogger too.
Hi anh, I know you wil think of something beautiful.
Hi kalyn, so pleased that you will participate, especially with your pedigree in tasty healthy food.
Hi barbara, that's fantastic, can't wait to see what you come up with.
Hi andrea, you can say that again. We're a bit lucky with vegetables, our girl eats a few, but fruit is pretty much a demilitarized zone!
Hi cc, I love people who work with people on the spectrum, you're all legends in my book. Of course that would be alright, sharing the knowledge is what this is about. If there was one dominant colour, so much the better.
Hi tanna, I know you've got healthy down pat! Yeah, one colour is the real challenge, imagine what some parents have to go through.
Good on you Neil. It's an amazing challenge. Will see if I can get my act together in time. Am thinking yellow - a frittata with yellow fleshed waxy potatoes, onion, organic eggs and little yellow heirloom tomatoes on top. Or orange - sweet potato, carrot, pumpkin and lentil soup. Or green - green lentils and steamed greens held together with salsa verde and a few extra green olives.
Hey this could be really fun :) Good luck.
