About Me
I'm a Melbourne boy, hailing from St Kilda with one ex, one current wife and four kids. Love the outdoors and making new discoveries. I cook a lot at home (cheers from wife) and do some preserving, mostly jams, pickles and fruit liqueurs. This is the diary of a cooking journey.

Too Rude For Food
Gordon Ramsey is in Oz and has turned three of Sydney's finest female bloggers to quivering blanc mange. Don't believe me? Read here, here and here! What I can't quite get over is that these girls have in their midst another food personality who I would have thought is a much better proposition than Rammers.

I wrote about him a few months ago...

I now know the reason for Bill's success. It's not his cooking abilities, fine and all as they are, it's his smile. I've watched him on the telly and he does smile all the time, but the camera doesn't do it justice. Bill's smile is gorgeous - not in the gay sense, though there could be one or two boys who would have to tell their beating hearts to be still, but gorgeous like on a cold, drab winter's day when the sun suddenly breaks through and everything lights up and even though it's winter you feel warm from it. His smile is instantly warm and affectionate and he had all the women in the queue swooning for him.

I cannot imagine Sydney's gays lining up for Gordon, unless they were up for a bit of rough trade, but that Sydney women are falling about themselves really does surprise me. I suppose that's the reason why 'snags' never could cut it, some girls can't help themselves. When confronted with a blast of male testosterone in full flight, some primeval force speaks to them and says, "That is the future of the human race, go and get yourself some."

Besides that, they'd probably eat well for a time.

I must admit to also having been charmed by the Gordon Ramsay experience. I saw him at David Jones Food Hall and he made me laugh a LOT - maybe that's the key? He says outstandingly outrageous things, but it's all done with a sense of irony and the ridiculous. Mind you, I think he'd be a nightmare to go out with / live with / be married to - high maintenance and arrogant at the same time.

My problem with Bill Granger is that he's just a bit bland . . .

Now that Gordon has made his fortune he can afford to be ironic. When I saw the YouTube I linked to, I thought of my own two sons that are around the same age as those cooks and waiters. There is no way I would want them to be treated that way, nor could I believe any mother would want that for her own sons. In full flight Rammers is dysfunctional and that is what makes him interesting/fascinating. Is Bill bland or just nice?

Fair comment - as I said, I would NOT want to go out with / be married to Mr Ramsay . . . and I'm sure that extends to having nearest and dearest within close proximity to him. But I don't think that humour and irony come with a fortune, you don't suddenly buy those things - they're an intrinsic part of you. Maybe having the money means you can relax enough to show off that part of you? He's certainly a very driven individual.

And yes Bill is "nice" - nice food, nice personality, nice, nice, nice . . . but yes, I do think he's bland.

I´ve never seen Bill on Tv, but last week in England I saw Gordon for the first time, and thought him really obnoxious.Even worse is the Spanish version of Hell´s kitchen, with some initially normal nice chef guys imitating his badass way and just coming off as incomprehensibly rude.

Hi kathryn, I take your point that you wouldn't want to go out with him, but there just seem to be so many girls who do, it must be a nightmare to married to him.

Hi lobstersquad, I'm so with you on Gordon. A Spanish Hell's Kitchen, now that sounds wonderfully wrong!

Hi bron, good to meet you too! It's just a crazy mixed up world when guys like Gordon can thrive. Liked your gumboot idea.

Hi Neil - back from the land of the great white grape and had to weigh in here. I was blase about Rammers until this lunch. Like Kathryn, this isn't about mating for life but about va va voom! In a nutshell, all that bluster has got him where he is, but he is also UTTERLY charming, with a capital C. And he's an iconoclast which is really fatally attractive. And Bill Granger? He just doesn't press any of those buttons and neither does his food. There's no passion or risk in a child friendly chicken nugget. He's the Stepford Wife of cuisine. Ramsay is a fighter pilot :) He might not thrive in every circumstance but it's a bit of a thrill looking on.

Hi reb, Bill Granger the Stepford Wife of cuisine, I love it! And I really do get Gordon and the effect he has, fighter pilots have been slaying the women for years a la Top Gun. Iconoclast? I'm not so sure. The sort of behaviour he exhibits is not unfamiliar in restaurant kitchens despite all the nice t.v. smiles, even Gordon was subjected to it. It's just that Gordon has taken it to a new public level. He hasn't used it to destroy or pull something down, rather, he has built an empire from it.

Bill Granger is/was gay. He used to go out with Peter Alexander (pyjama queen). He moved to Sydney with some sugardaddy arrangement in about 87/88. We had a few nights together, but I would hardly call them wild. I found his smile to be creepy to be honest, not a nice person at all and was glad he moved to Sydney from Melbourne, as it is basically the last I saw of him until he re-invented himself as straight...yet the 'king' of scrambled eggs... whoo hoo! PS He was going bald back then when he was 19.

My mum used to be bffs with bill and he dated her, Peter Alexander, and quite a few other people (boys and girls) who knows if he is straight or gay but apparently he is great at making breakfast
